What is a Streaming Mic, and How is it different from Regular Mics?

If you’re new to the world of microphones, you’d be surprised by just how complicated these devices can get. There are several different types of microphones in the market, and each type uses a different method to capture sound and convert it into audio. I’m not going to go into great detail about the different types of mics and how they work (that’s a whole other topic for another time). In this guide, I’m going to focus on the type of mics that are best for streaming purposes.

Technically, you can pretty much use any type of microphone for streaming. However, not every mic will produce good results. And since your own voice is such a crucial element of any streaming setup, it’s important to have a microphone that can capture your voice clearly.

When I say “streaming mic,” I’m talking about quality condenser microphones. Condenser mics are ideal streaming microphones as they are designed to capture sound from one direction. They capture your voice with superb clarity while ignoring mild noise that may be coming from around you (such as the sound of your keyboard or controller as you play online).

When compared to other types of microphones (such as dynamic mics), condensers come out on top. This is because condenser microphones are designed with studio usage in mind. This doesn’t mean that you should only consider condenser mics when shopping for the best streaming microphone. Dynamic mics tend to perform better in environments with a lot of loud noises. If your streaming setup is situated somewhere noisy, you’re going to be better off with a dynamic mic.

Streaming Mic Guide – What to Consider Before Buying:

We’ve established that condenser microphones are the obvious choice when it comes to streaming. However, this isn’t the only thing that you should consider when picking the best microphone for streaming. There are several other factors that you should keep in mind when picking the best mic for live streaming.

Here’s what you should take into consideration:

  • Quality
  • Price
  • Diaphragm Size
  • Frequency
  • Mic Type

Let’s take a look at each factor.

1- Quality

Your mic is always going to be a core component of your streaming setup. This means that you should look for a quality and reliable microphone. A good quality mic should be able to capture your voice with clarity and consistency. The last thing you want is for your mic to stop capturing audio during the middle of a streaming session.

When picking a mic, make sure that you go for a device that is tried and tested. There are a number of well-known brands in the market that you can try. Another great way to check for a mic’s quality is by reading what users have to say about it. You can always go through user reviews on Amazon and other platforms.

Remember, the best microphone for streaming should be consistent and dependable. All of the live streaming microphones that I’ve reviewed in this guide are great in terms of quality.

2- Price

This factor will vary from buyer to buyer. Everyone has their own set of requirements and how much they’re willing to spend on a product. My personal recommendation to you would be to dedicate a significant portion of your streaming setup budget to your microphone. Instead of spending money on a snazzy gaming chair or tons of RGB, spend more on your microphone.

Keep in mind that I’m not saying that you should spend hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on your microphone. Some of the live streaming microphones that I’ve included in this buyer’s guide are below $100 and are still pretty good choices.

3- Diaphragm Size

Microphones use a diaphragm to capture sound waves and convert them into digital signals. When it comes to live streaming microphones, a larger diaphragm is better. Diaphragms above 0.75 inches in width are considered large. Larger diaphragms are more sensitive to vibration and capture low-frequency sounds more easily, meaning they capture the sound of your voice accurately and clearly. Simply put, when looking for the best microphone for streaming, go for mics with a larger diaphragm.

4- Frequency

A streaming mic is primarily used to capture a streamer’s voice. This means you need a mic that is good at capturing the frequency range of the human voice. Unless you’re a sound freak, you shouldn’t go into too much detail about the frequency range of your microphone. Just look for a microphone with a frequency range of 20Hz to 20,000Hz.

5- Mic Type for Streaming (Dynamic vs Condenser)

We’ve already established in the previous section that condenser mics win when it comes to sound quality and clarity for live streaming. However, I’m not saying you shouldn’t consider any other type of microphone as well. When talking about the best microphone for streaming, people often go into the dynamic vs condenser debate, and for a good reason.

While condenser microphones perform exceptionally well in silent or low noise environments, they can get confused in noisy environments. Dynamic mics are better in louder environments since they can pick sound selectively. This means that the type of mic that suits you the most for streaming depends on what type of location you are streaming from.

The dynamic vs condenser mic for streaming debate can go both ways. If you have a dedicated room for streaming, you should go for a condenser microphone. If you’re streaming from someplace noisy (or where there’s a lot of background noise), you should go for a dynamic mic.

  • This article will be confusing to someone with no audio knowledge.

I feel you would have been better to discuss difference between USB & XLR microphones, explain how an interface is required.

You have suggested both USB mics, and XLR with no mention of the required additional equipment that comes at a significant extra cost.

Your blank statement about dynamic mics and condenser mics is absolutely not comprehensive and lacks genuine distinction between the two types of microphones. And I shall also point out, the missing type is a ribbon mic, as there are only 3 types of microphones in the XLR range.

You have chosen a couple of decent mics, and the rest are absolutely useless for streaming, a couple would work, if you were trying to mic musical instruments for stream, but not for vocals.

This is not an informative article, it is not useful for any practical application, streamer or otherwise.

    • Hey miss jilly,

So there is a lot of research that goes into these articles. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to write them myself more have the skillset to do so.. although I understand your frustration with the lack of detail in USB vs XLR requirements the mic suggestions are great suggestions for price and purpose. The explanations for condenser and dynamic microphones could have more clarification but they aren’t inaccurate. I intend to correct some of issues or questionable sentences written by the writer I hired.. however many flaws there might be it is not a false or misleading article. These mics is a list developed by professional audio engineers in the streaming field and are selected with purpose and reason. Could I adjust the list and make them typical gamer mic suggestions? Yes. Would those microphone be worth the money? No.
